Brian Mallon's Ju-Jitsu Club

My child has never done this sort of thing before, can they still come ?

Absolutely, they will be made to feel very welcome and as most of the children in the club attend local schools they are bound to know someone.

What should my child wear for the first class ?

Track bottoms and T-Shirt are fine, we train in bare feet so footwear is not essential. If, after several weeks your child decides that Ju-jitsu is for them, then we ask you to buy a Gi (training uniform) from the club. These are always available.

What happens at the first class ?

All classes begin with the students taking to the training mat and greeting their Sensei. At this time Sensei Mallon will introduce the new children and invite them to join in with the warm-up. Once warmed up the children go off into groups determined by belt colour and ability for their syllabus training . At this point Sensei Mallon will spend a little time with the new starters performing very basic rolls and break-falls to help them relax and feel involved with the session. Following a quick break for refreshments its back on the training mat for more fun and games. Once the session has ended the children are ready to go home...usually wanting to practice all they have learnt on mum and dad !!!

My child is reluctant to stay on their own...can I stay with them ?

Of course, we invite the parent to stay and watch for the first week. Usually students settle in quite quickly....The beauty of ju-jitsu is that it builds confidence and most parents are surprised how quickly their child forgets all about mum or dad watching.

OK...my childs been coming for a while and now i've got the bug...what about adult classes ?

Many of the parents now attend classes, We offer an adult class on Friday night (St Joseph's) and Sunday morning (Corringham Village Hall) that caters for student of all ages and abilities - we also hold a Saturday morning Ladies self-defense and fitness class. Details about these classes can be found elsewhere on this website.

Do I need to purchase gloves, head guards etc for my child?

We have a limited number of gloves and head guards within the club that the children can use whilst training and competing. However, many of the children like to have their own equipment and this is available from the club at very fair prices.

Can I buy my child’s equipment elsewhere?

Because of the varying quality of marshal arts equipment, we ask that parents refrain from buying equipment outside of the club. Sensei Mallon approves all the equipment that is sold at the club to ensure the safety of your child and other students.

How much does it cost ?

Training sessions start at £4.00

If your child decides to stay at the club we ask you to purchase a Gi (training uniform)

Your child will be invited to undertake gradings in order to progress to the next level.

Once a child reaches five years old they are required by law to register with a reconized body.We are registered with the British Ju-Jitsu Asociation. A licence will be issued by the BJJA and is renewable yearly.

Is my child insured at the club?

Yes, the club is required to hold insurance. In addition to this each child over to age of five years of age has limited insurance as part of their Jikshin registration.
